What Chevening actually pays for

Worth stating plainly, because “fully funded” is used loosely by a lot of scholarship pages.

For a one-year master’s at a UK university, Chevening covers:

• Travel costs to and from the UK
• An arrival allowance
• A homeward departure allowance
• The cost of one visa application
• A travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK

The four essays are the application

“I have strong leadership skills” is a claim. “I coordinated eleven volunteers across three districts and cut our distribution time from nine days to four” is evidence. One of those sentences can be assessed by a reading committee. The other cannot.

Three practical rules that follow from this:

• Use one concrete example per essay and go deep, rather than listing five achievements shallowly. Depth is what makes an example verifiable and memorable.
• Include numbers wherever you honestly can — people, hours, budgets, percentage change, duration.
• Make the career plan specific enough to be falsifiable. “I want to contribute to Pakistan’s development” tells a reader nothing. Naming a sector, a type of organisation, and a problem you intend to work on tells them everything.

Nine weeks is the right amount of time for this — if you use it. Experienced applicants typically draft, leave the essays alone for a week, and rewrite. Nobody writes four strong essays in a weekend.

What happens after you submit

Understanding the pipeline helps you write for the right reader.

Eligible applications are assessed by independent reading committees. Their shortlists go to British embassies and high commissions, which produce the final interview list for each country.
